5.NF.B.4 — Multiply Fractions

What 5.NF.B.4 Covers

Grade 5, Number & Operations—Fractions, Cluster B (apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division). The full standard has two parts: 5.NF.B.4.a interprets a fraction-times-fraction product using a visual model and a story context, and 5.NF.B.4.b finds the area of a rectangle with fractional side lengths by tiling it with unit squares.

Scope note: this generator drills the numeric skill underneath part (a) — multiplying two fractions and simplifying the result. It doesn't build visual/area models, write story contexts, or cover whole-number-by-fraction products (the other case named in the parent standard) or the rectangle-area application in part (b).

Where It Fits

Follows 5.NF.A.1's addition and subtraction of fractions and leads into 6.NS.A.1's division of fractions by fractions.

Common Mistakes

• Finding a common denominator first, which is only needed for addition/subtraction — not multiplication.
• Multiplying the numerator of one fraction by the denominator of the other instead of numerator×numerator and denominator×denominator.
• Forgetting to simplify a product that reduces to lower terms.
